The Busoga Consortium for Development (BCD) has boosted the ongoing Busoga Masaza Cup Tournament with the donation of training soccer balls to 14 participating teams, in a move aimed at supporting local talent and strengthening community football as the competition nears its climax.

The initiative follows the recent Busoga–Shandong Cooperation Signing Ceremony, where BCD and Shandong Province reaffirmed their commitment to community development and youth empowerment across Busoga.

The donation, presented by Ms. Esther Mirembe, the Public Relations Officer of BCD, was officially received by the Speaker of the Busoga Lukiiko, Owek. George Mutyabule, and the Deputy Speaker, Owek. Florence Biruma, on behalf of the Busoga Kingdom.

“This gesture comes at a crucial time as the tournament nears its climax. We urge team managers to make good use of the balls to improve local teams and nurture talent,” said Mirembe.

In his remarks, Owek. George Mutyabule applauded the Consortium for its continued support to sports and pledged that the Lukiiko would ensure the balls reach all the intended teams.

“We appreciate BCD for this timely support. It will motivate our teams and help elevate community football standards in Busoga,” he noted.

The Busoga Masaza Cup has become one of the region’s most vibrant sporting events, uniting communities and showcasing exceptional football talent from across the chiefdoms. The latest donation reflects BCD’s growing commitment to promoting youth empowerment, sports excellence, and regional cooperation as key pillars of Busoga’s development.

The Busoga Consortium for Development (BCD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (M O U) with the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre (NAGRIC) to roll out a UGX 126 million poultry project that is expected to transform household incomes and drive rural prosperity.

The initiative, centered on the high-yield Rainbow chicken breed, will be implemented in three phases across model villages. By 2030, experts project that each village could generate up to UGX 25 billion annually from poultry alone, positioning the sector as a key driver of the sub-region’s economic growth.

The project is anchored within the Busoga 10-Year Development Agenda, a strategic framework aimed at propelling the region into one of Uganda’s most prosperous economic hubs by 2030.

During the signing ceremony, BCD lauded its partners including the Chinese Embassy in Uganda, China Agricultural University, China-Uganda Agricultural Cooperation Industrial Park, Sunbelt Industries, and The Was Company Ltd for supporting the region’s agricultural modernization through donations of post-harvest equipment, modern farming technologies, and investments in value addition.

Wamboga Nicholas, the Director of The Was Company Ltd, reaffirmed his firm’s commitment to the partnership, assuring Busoga Consortium and the people of Busoga that the company will deliver the highest quality support and services.

“We are committed to delivering the best and ensuring quality in everything we provide under this project,” he said, emphasizing the company’s long-term vision to uplift farmers and strengthen Busoga’s agricultural value chains.

The poultry initiative is rooted in the Village Agricultural Model, launched in 2024 by Vice President H.E. Maj. (Rtd.) Jessica Alupo in Namayingo District. The model complements the Parish Development Model (PDM) championed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and is designed to anchor Busoga’s long-term socio-economic transformation.

Under the phased rollout, 9,000 Rainbow chickens will be distributed across three pilot villages within four months 1,500 in Phase I, 3,000 in Phase II, and 4,500 in Phase III. The chicks will be brooded for six weeks, fully vaccinated, and monitored for disease resistance before distribution. Unlike local breeds, Rainbow chickens produce 170–200 eggs annually, offering higher income potential and greater food security.

“This M O U marks a decisive step in repositioning Busoga as a hub of agricultural productivity and economic prosperity,” the BCD leadership said. “Through the combined efforts of the Government of Uganda and our partners, we are confident these goals are achievable.”

BCD projects that at least 50 percent of households in model villages will be earning no less than UGX 50 million annually by 2030. The poultry project will serve as a critical entry point alongside fisheries, livestock, and crop farming to transform model villages into centers of agricultural excellence.

Regional leaders including First Deputy Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, ministers, cultural and religious leaders, and local government officials have pledged support to ensure the initiative’s success.

The Busoga Consortium Secretariat, led by Director General Anthony Mula, has initiated partnership with the Soroti City AISICAT Farmers Cooperative Society Limited (SCAFCSL) to promote large-scale commercial agriculture in Uganda.

SCAFCSL comprises members of the Lwala Girls Abducted Survivors Association (LWAGASA) and other community members from the Teso sub-region.

The cooperative focuses on economic empowerment through commercial farming ventures, including groundnuts, soya beans, and poultry rearing.

This initiative seeks to unlock greater export market opportunities, enhance production capacity, and increase household incomes through high-value agriculture.

During his engagement with the farmers, DG Mula stressed the importance of teamwork, identifying priority crops, outlining clear project objectives, and setting realistic budgets.

He pledged to facilitate the establishment of cooperation between AISICAT and the Greater Kamuli Agricultural Cooperative through guiding the signing of a working MOU. He noted this while emphasizing the longstanding historical cooperation between Busoga and Teso Sub-Regions that was based on Trade, Inter-marriages and cultural relations.

The two cooperatives are expected to boost the renewal of the historical cooperation between the two sub-regions through sharing of experiences in modern agricultural practices, trade and market linkages, people to people relations, cultural relations, education and sports, among others.

Later this year, the Cooperative is expected to conduct a benchmarking visit to Greater Kamuli Agri-business Cooperative to learn from its agribusiness successes.

On the value-addition front, soya was highlighted as a major commodity. It can be processed into soya milk, soya porridge, cooking oil, peanut candy, chicken feed, and other profitable products.

Mr. Mula also revealed that the Busoga Consortium is soon introducing the rearing of Rainbow chicken variety in the Busoga model villages as part of the efforts to address household poverty. This type of chicken is said to lay between 170–200 eggs per year, ensuring both food security and income generation. He encouraged the cooperative to adopt similar poultry projects for diversification.

AISICAT Chairperson Ms. Itola Doreen expressed appreciation to Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga and Her Excellency Maj. Rtd. Jessica Alupo, for their consistent support to the Lwala girls abducted survivors community.

She praised Kadaga as a mother figure who opened educational doors for the survivors and linked them to the Busoga Consortium for mentorship and capacity building.

LWAGASA was established on 10th August 2015 to support the reintegration of survivors of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency and their children many of whom were born in captivity.

The association promotes the empowerment and emancipation of these women, their families, and the wider community.

The origins of LWAGASA are rooted in a tragic event on 24th June 2003, when the LRA, led by Joseph Kony, abducted over 180 girls from Lwala Girls Secondary School in Kaberamaido District (now Kalaki).

While some escaped, others were killed, and many remain in captivity. Survivors endured severe atrocities, including sexual abuse, physical torture, and the spread of diseases such as HIV/AIDS. Many returned to face land grabbing, extreme poverty, stigma, and rejection from their own families.

The former abducted girls are found in the districts of kalaki, Kaberamaido, kapelebyong, katakwi, kumi, Kwania, Amuria ,amolatar,Alebtong, Apac,Soroti, Lira, oyam and Dokolo. The association therefore operates in these district

The association has secured over 3,000 acres of land in Soroti, which will be used for large-scale agriculture, training, and economic projects.

Despite their traumatic past, the former abducted girls have united to rebuild their lives. Through AISICAT and its partnership with the Busoga Consortium, they are embracing modern agricultural practices, value addition, and market-oriented production to transform their livelihoods.

Chairperson Doreen reaffirmed that this collaboration marks a turning point for survivors and their communities—one that promises dignity, self-reliance, and sustainable growth.

Busoga, Uganda – August 7, 2025

In a continued effort to strengthen agricultural transformation in Busoga Sub-region, the Busoga Consortium for Development distributed tarpaulins to soya farmers in selected model villages across Kamuli, Mayuge, and Namayingo Districts.

The handover function, held at Busana Model Village in Kamuli District, was presided over by the Director General of the Busoga Consortium, Mr. Mula Anthony, who emphasized the importance of proper post-harvest handling in improving crop quality and market value.

“We are committed to ensuring that farmers in our model villages do not just grow food but grow wealth. The provision of tarpaulins is part of our broader strategy to add value, reduce post-harvest losses, and support sustainable livelihoods,” Mr. Mula said during the ceremony.

The initiative has so far benefited farmers in three model villages:
Busana in Kamuli District, Mashaiga in Mayuge District, Namayombe in Namayingo District
These villages were selected under the Consortium’s Model Village Program, which focuses on integrated rural development through agribusiness, digital inclusion, and value addition.

Currently, farmers in these areas are harvesting soya beans, and the distribution of tarpaulins is seen as timely and essential in preventing post-harvest losses caused by improper drying methods.
The event was attended by members of the Village Agricultural Committees (VAC), local government agricultural officers, and representatives from the farming communities. Many farmers expressed gratitude for the support, noting that it would improve both the quality and quantity of their harvests.

“Before, we used to dry our harvests on bare ground which exposed them to dirt and contamination. With these tarpaulins, we can now meet the required quality standards for larger markets,” said Suleman Amisi from Mashaiga model village in Mayuge.

The Busoga Consortium continues to rally stakeholders, including government agencies, research institutions, and development partners to scale up support for farmers and accelerate rural transformation across the region.

On behalf of the Busoga Consortium for Development (BCD) commonly referred to as “Busoga Consortium”, I congratulate you on marking 25 years of significant growth, progress, resilience and unity as Twegiate International fraternity in the United States of America (USA).

I thank the current leadership for the astute leadership and coordination of this year’s special edition of the Twegaite International. I equally thank all the previous Presidents of Twegaite International especially the founders for having conceived and pioneered this great framework that enables the People of Busoga in the USA to annually gather to not only reflect on the journey, achievements and challenges faced as a community; but also seek to draw strategies to contribute to the transformation of your motherland of Busoga and Uganda at large.

As you gather and reflect on the previous 25 years of existence, I wish to challenge you to always preserve your identity as People of Busoga and Ugandans by demonstrating great love for your culture and nation.

The 10 year Busoga Development Agenda (BDA) (www.busoga.go.ug) identifies four (4) historical values noted to define our identity as People of Busoga including UBUNTU (I am because we are – selflessness), Nationalism and Patriotism (lasting love and belonging for Busoga), Integrity (upholding honest, moral and ethical principles) and Consensus. These values are very important in building a formidable united and prosperous Busoga; superintended over by His Majesty the Kyabazinga as our cultural leader and pillar of unity. I therefore would like to encourage you to continue upholding and cherishing these values as the basis for our identity, strength, unity and growth.

As you may be aware, the Diaspora is recognized as a key driver of National development. As Basoga fraternity from the world’s greatest economy, I wish to remind you that a lot is expected of you to champion the revival of the economic glory of Busoga. A conducive and friendly investment climate in Busoga is guaranteed by the Government of Uganda and is actioned by the BCD in collaboration with Busoga Kingdom and the Uganda Investment Authority. I therefore wish to invite you as stakeholders to come and invest in Busoga in the various sectors of the region’s economy.

As a way of facilitating FDIs and Basoga Diaspora led investments to Busoga, the BCD has set up a Directorate for Trade and Investment Promotion. This Directorate was designed to work with all relevant authorities and stakeholders to;

1. Profile all Investment and Trade opportunities in Busoga.
2. Establish a BCD Trade and Investment Facilitation Centre with the responsibility of promoting and strengthening trade and Investment between Busoga and the rest of the world.
3. Negotiate friendly incentives for Industrial Parks Development and investment within Busoga.
4. Provide necessary investment guidance and support to all potential investors in Busoga.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Busoga Consortium in partnership with the Office of the Vice President, the Chinese Embassy in Uganda and the Kehong China Uganda Agricultural Cooperation Industrial Park Luwero.

Delivering a message on behalf of the Vice President, Kadaga conveyed H.E. Alupo’s appreciation for the efforts of the Busoga Consortium in driving development at the grassroots level. “I commend the Busoga Consortium for their visionary leadership and tireless commitment to transforming lives. This project represents both progress and unity,” She stated.

“As we launch the project today, I am happy to note that this intervention is crafted on the basis of local existing strengths and development potentials of Busoga sub-region. By sharing cross-cutting resources therefore, you will increase attraction for both local and foreign investments as well as international trade promotion. As is the case with Soya bean growing, Chili growing will certainly expand Uganda’ potential to engage in export trade with China”, said Alupo in her statement.

Dr. Mula Anthony, Director General of the Busoga Consortium, together with the Secretariat team, encouraged communities across Busoga to actively participate in the chili project. The initiative is expected to significantly boost household incomes and create agribusiness opportunities throughout the region and Uganda at large.

On behalf of the investors, Mr. Zhang Shenhong, General Manager of the Kehong China Uganda Agricultural Cooperation Industrial Park assured the farmers and leaders of Busoga and Uganda market for the Chili that was to be grown. He noted that the Park is committed to ensuring that all the Chili grown by the farmers in Busoga and Uganda is bought at the seasonal negotiated price. The investors target 220,000 tonnes of Chili from Busoga and other parts of the Country in the short term valued at about $300 million dollars per annum.

Mr. Zhang informed the gathering that in addition to the out growers supplies, the park was to plant 500 acres of Chili to boost the quantities and sustain the Chinese market demand.

The chili farming project stands as a symbol of growing collaboration between Ugandan leadership and international partners. With the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries and the Government of China, the project aims to expand export markets, deliver technical training to farmers, and position Busoga as a major contributor to Uganda’s agricultural exports.

In a bid to fight poverty and boost food security in Busoga sub region, Busoga Consortium for Development (BCD), launched the mass planting season of Soya bean in three pilot districts under its Village Agricultural Model (VAM) project.

The VAM project being implemented by BCD aims at transforming livelihoods and also enhancing agricultural productivity in Busoga starting in the three piloting districts of Namayingo, Mayuge and Kamuli.

The mass planting of soya bean was launched on March 29th, in three model villages namely Namayombe in Buhemba sub county in Namayingo district; Mashiaga village in Mayuge district and in Busana Kamuli district.

The BCD VAM Soya bean planting season in Namayingo was officially launched by Busoga Kingdom’s Prime Minister Dr. Joseph Muvawala who was accompanied by the Namayingo district Mr. Ronald Sanya, Busoga Kingdom’s Agriculture Minister Sam Nkenga and Andrew Ntange the Spokesperson and Chief of Protocol in the office of the prime minister of Busoga Kingdom.

While addressing farmers who are beneficiaries from the project, Muvawala informed farmers that BCD has complemented the government of Uganda and ObwaKyabazinga Bwa Busoga in promoting development and urged people of Namayingo to embrace the project.

“Many people used not to believe in the programs of Busoga consortium and they used to sabotage it but now it has started working—it has responded to its enemies with action and not mere words,” Muvawala said, adding that Basoga ought to embrace farming in Busoga sub region.

He further cautioned people against sabotaging projects brought in Busoga to boost development and transform livelihoods through Obwa Kyabazinga Bwa Busoga.
